Apple stops debit and credit card payments in India

Through an updated Apple Support page on April 18, the company recommends users add funds to the Apple ID balance to continue enjoying subscriptions.

The decision to remove the debit and credit card payment option in India is the result of direct debit rules that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) changed last year.

Apple has stopped accepting payments for debit and credit subscriptions in India. The development essentially means that customers will now have to add money to their Apple funds – like a prepaid card – which will deduct money from the account each month when the subscription renews. Apple requires new iPhone or iPad users to create an Apple ID when setting up the device, and they are also required to provide banking details. If customers want to renew or purchase a subscription, such as Apple Music or Apple TV, the company offers its own payment gateway for the transaction. The transaction was previously possible via debit or credit cards, or UPI.

The decision to remove the debit and credit card payment option in India is the result of direct debit rules that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) changed last year. The new RBI mandate stated that there should no longer be automatic recurring payments for the various services such as utility bills, phone recharge, DTH and OTT payments. This basically meant that no amount of money would be deducted from the bank account without the manual approval of the customer. The change took place on October 1.

If existing Apple iPhone users have already added their debit or credit information, the “Payment and Shipping” section of the Settings menu displays “[card] not supported”. Through an updated Apple Support page on April 18, the company recommends that users add funds to the Apple ID balance to continue enjoying subscriptions. The page note :

“Regulatory requirements in India apply to the processing of recurring transactions. If you have an Indian debit or credit card and have a subscription, these changes impact your transactions. Some transactions may be declined by banks and card issuers. To continue enjoying your subscriptions, you can pay with your Apple ID balance. You can add to your Apple ID balance using App Store, Net Banking, and UPI codes.

Users are advised to obtain an Apple Balance account and link it to UPI to continue subscriptions.
