SYCOMORE – A suspected bank robber is on the loose after Heartland Bank in downtown Sycamore was targeted on Wednesday by the man who threatened employees and escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash, said Sycamore Police Chief Jim Winters.
Police are asking for the public’s help in their search, according to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department. Police released CCTV photos of the incident on Wednesday, which show a hooded man dressed in black inside the bank.
Sycamore Police responded to a call at 2:05 p.m. Wednesday for a bank robbery report at Heartland Bank, 124 S. Main St. Winters said the 911 call came from employees inside the bank, but by the time the police arrived a few minutes later, the man was gone.
Winters declined to say how much money was taken.
Police learned that a man with a covered face entered the bank and used a note to demand money from bank staff. It is not known if the man had a weapon, police said.
“There were no weapons displayed by the suspect,” Winters said. ” Fortunately, nobody was hurt. He fled the bank in an unknown direction and we’re following a few possible vehicles.
Winters said the Heartland Bank lobby was briefly closed to the public on Wednesday while police conducted an investigation.
DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted. Winters said Sycamore police are working with DeKalb police to determine if the accused robber has ties to nearby crime in the area.
No arrests have yet been made.
Sycamore Police investigators are urging anyone who may have seen anything or have information related to the incident to call police at 815-895-2123 or DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Callers can also request to remain anonymous and can receive a cash reward of up to $1,000.
