Erie Bank Sports Park hosts 2022 Sarah Backstrom Memorial Hockey Tournament

Many hockey teams faced off on the ice at Erie Bank Sports Park on February 19 for the 2022 Sarah Backstrom Memorial Tournament.

Here’s more about the journey the athletes took to compete in the tournament, as well as what participants enjoyed about the game.

Hockey fans packed Erie Bank Sports Park to show their support for the teams as they raced against the clock to claim the big title.

The 2022 Sarah Backstrom Hockey Tournament is one of the largest ongoing hockey tournaments in the country and in Canada.

All-female hockey teams took to the ice to show off their skills and compete for a win to advance to the next game.

“It feels really good. We tied a game yesterday and won, so I feel really good to come out today,” said athlete Isabella Mayorga.

Teams practice continuously before the tournament to ensure they can compete to the best of their abilities.

“Work hard, do the extra work. Like our team, we run a mile every week to increase our endurance and strength,” said athlete Reagan Amposca.

Fans in attendance recalled the aspects they appreciated the most when watching their favorite athletes.

“She really likes it and I love seeing her with the puck and shooting and stuff,” said Carly Rinieri, a relative of the athlete.

Those in attendance also shared what it was like to see their favorite place get the ice cream.

“I love watching her really do her best. In fact, she just broke her arm, so it’s like she was playing a game a long time ago. So it’s really fun to watch her try and having fun, having a good time,” Rinieri said.
