Israel braces for violent confrontation with settlers in West Bank

Israeli security forces were preparing on Tuesday for possible outbreaks of confrontations and clashes with Jewish settlers in the West Bank over the establishment of an illegal outpost.

A settler movement earlier announced plans to illegally take three positions and form outposts in a show of force, backed by religious nationalist rabbis, right-wing political activists and successful fundraising.

In preparation for the plan, the settler group distributed kits containing basic supplies to families who intend to stay put despite the actions of law enforcement.

Police and military troops plan to erect roadblocks to prevent access to selected outposts in hopes of preventing a forced eviction of women and children from the sites.

They will issue orders to close areas, confiscate equipment and prevent what they believe to be hundreds of families, including young children, from reaching their destination.

Forces will be deployed not only on roads but also on mountain sides and open fields.

“It is a challenge for the forces,” said a security official, “because there are several places that need to be secured. This is an illegal action taken by the settlers and we will not allow the construction of no outposts,” he said.

“Our greatest fear is that people who think their efforts are within the law will find themselves confronted by police and military personnel, and the prospect of violent clashes could have a lasting effect,” he said. declared.
