Paul Merson believes Arsenal need to invest money to bring Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic to the club this month.

Arsenal will need a striker given that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seems unlikely to play for the club anytime soon after his exile from Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette are both out of contract this summer and Vlahovic has been identified as a priority target for the Gunners.

The Serbian has 23 goals in all competitions for club and country this season and is also attracting interest from Tottenham and Newcastles.

Arsenal are said to be the favorites for the forward’s signing and Merson is keen for Arsenal to act now.

‘Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished at Arsenal. He will not return from the Africa Cup of Nations, ”he told the Daily Star.

“They would have to break the bank to bring in Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina this summer – because he would make them title contenders.

“I’ve heard he isn’t interested in Arsenal at the moment and I can take that. But he might change his mind if they finish in the top four and give him a truck full of cash.

“Arsenal could play him every week because Aubameyang will be gone. Alexandre Lacazette will probably be gone. And Eddie Nketiah too.

“They will need a goalscorer and Vlahovic is scoring goals. He’s also still young so he should be doing better and you’re not wasting money paying a 29-year-old on the way down.

Arsenal got stronger last summer with the arrival of Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White to bolster their defense, but Merson believes a proven striker is needed to take Arsenal to the next level.

“I think there are good things going on at Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has made them play well. But they need a proven striker next season,” Merson added.

“He signed a keeper, defenders, full-backs, midfielders and a No 10, kids promoted on the wings – a good center-forward could be the missing piece.

“I’m not saying they’ll win the championship if they get Vlahovic. But they’ll have a chance to make it at least a four-horse race.
