SUMMER TRAVEL: Colorado getaways that won’t break the bank

DENVER (KDVR) — If you’re looking for a getaway this summer that won’t blow your budget, travel experts say there are plenty of options here in Colorado.

Willis Orlando of Scott’s Cheap Flights says now is a good time to book hotels if you plan to travel during the summer months.

“If you wanted to take that jaunt to downtown Denver to experience the city in a really great way, hotel prices are still pretty low,” Orlando said.

Orlando suggests visiting our state’s less popular national parks to avoid the crowds, like Gunnison State Park and Mesa Verde, adding that many small mountain towns often offer good summer rental rates.

“You can ride in the old ghost towns, you can walk around and learn about the history, you’re going to find the fares are pretty low,” Orlando said.

If you’re looking to travel out of state, Orlando says the travel days that offer the best rates are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. He suggests slightly off-the-beaten-path tropical destinations for a cheaper fare, like a flight from Denver to Panama City.

“Just because average prices are going up doesn’t mean you have to pay that price, if you’re savvy and keep an eye out for bargains,” Orlando said. “Just be patient, be ready, and strike when the iron is hot.”

Orlando recommends booking domestic flights for one to three months and international travel for at least two to five months.
