By Ruben Morales Iglesias: The Government of Belize will upgrade three miles of the Nago Bank Road in Belize District at a cost of BZ$1.75 million.

The Nago Bank Road Improvement Project was announced on Thursday after a BZ$1,734,102.34 contract was signed on May 9, 2022 between the Government of Belize and Teichroeb & Sons Limited to upgrade three miles of the Nago Bank Road.

“Along with Maskall and Bomba, the Nago Bank area serves as a ‘vegetable basket’ for the Belize District and elsewhere; therefore, adequate road access is crucial for food security as it ensures that farmers can bring their produce to market all year round,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE ).

The Nago Bank Road Improvement Project is an initiative of the six-year Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) program. The RRB program aims to minimize the impacts of climatic and economic events on micro, small and medium-sized farms and households.

“Its development objective is to strengthen the overall resilience of MSMEs to climate change by adopting new or improved climate-resilient practices, increasing and diversifying agricultural production and facilitating access for smallholder farmers, including improving the road access to commercial market chains for harvesting. of their excess production,” MAFSE said.

The RRB program invests BZ$40 million over its six-year period. The program is implemented by the Government of Belize with funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and participating grantees.

The RRB program provides technical and financial assistance to agricultural cooperatives through a matching grant fund. MAFSE said cooperatives like Los Pequeños Agricultores y Ganaderos de Nago Bank Co-operative Society Limited benefit from the scheme.

The program not only helps farmers’ organizations with technical assistance and capacity building, but it also helps communities of producer organizations to upgrade agricultural feeder roads so that farmers get their goods to markets in a more efficient way. more effective and efficient.

The RRB program is also assisting Los Pequeños Agricultores y Ganaderos de Nago Bank Co-operative Society Limited, through a matching grant agreement, to construct a water facility, storage shed/ climate-friendly packaging and irrigation tools. In addition, he assists the cooperative in its capacity building efforts so that it is better organized and can support itself financially.

MAFSE said the RRB program is expected to carry out similar projects for 30 farming communities across Belize.
